Compact Table Tops: A Selection Guide for Cafes, Restaurants and Schools

In cafes, restaurants, schools and shared spaces, the table top is one of the most touched surfaces. Selection should therefore consider water, impact, heat, scratches and repeated cleaning, not just decor. Compact laminate table tops stand out for this reason.

What is a compact table top?

It is a self-supporting top made from phenolic-resin kraft layers pressed with decorative surfaces under high pressure. It needs no MDF or chipboard substrate; the edge is solid compact. This helps in spaces exposed to moisture and impact.

Where is it used?

  • Cafes and restaurants: frequent cleaning, hot service and high turnover.
  • Schools and cafeterias: impact, scratch resistance and cleanability.
  • Offices: durable meeting and work surfaces.
  • Outdoor areas: when the correct exterior-suitable grade is selected.

Critical details

Thickness should match span, base type and load. The solid compact edge helps against water and impact. Surface texture affects maintenance. Leg-fixing holes should be CNC-planned, and outdoor use requires the right UV/weather grade.
